Connected workbooks not updating

Currently, the default sharing setting for these site collections is to allow sharing with external users already in your organization's directory.
I tried created a note pad file, updated the file at two different times and every one is able to see the changes, so for now I know it is not the issue with the shared drive, but something to do with excel.
I was also told that only one person can update an excel file from a shared drive at a time, so I tried that, but still they can't see each other's updates.
You can list users individually, or you can use an Active Directory group.
We recommend that you use an Active Directory group for ease of administration.
